Your dashcam's factory settings are tuned for a clear, dry day. The monsoon breaks all of those assumptions — glare off wet roads, headlights smearing through rain, fog swallowing number plates, and dark afternoons under storm clouds. A few setting changes make the difference between footage that reads a plate through the rain and footage that's a useless blur. Here's exactly what to adjust for Indian monsoon driving.
Why monsoon footage fails on default settings
Rain creates two opposite lighting problems at once: bright, blinding reflections off wet tarmac and glass, and dark, low-contrast scenes under heavy cloud and fog. Default exposure can't handle both, so it either blows out the highlights (losing plates in glare) or crushes the shadows (losing everything in the gloom). The fixes below are about helping the camera cope with that extreme range — and cutting the reflections that cause most of the trouble.
Turn WDR on — and understand what it does
WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) balances bright and dark areas in the same frame, which is exactly the monsoon problem. Cameras like the Sense 4K Ultra include WDR for this reason.
- Keep WDR enabled through the monsoon. It pulls detail back into both the glare off a wet road and the dark shadow under an overpass in the same shot.
- If your footage during rain looks either washed-out or too dark, confirm WDR is actually on — it's the first setting to check.
- WDR won't fix everything, but it's the single most important toggle for mixed monsoon light.
Adjust exposure (EV) for grey, wet conditions
Most dashcams let you nudge exposure value (EV):
- On dark, stormy afternoons, a slightly positive EV (+0.5) lifts the gloom so the road and plates aren't lost in shadow.
- When there's heavy glare off wet roads, a slightly negative EV (−0.5) tames the blown-out highlights so reflections don't swallow detail.
- Don't overdo it — small steps. Reset to neutral once the weather clears so you're not shooting a bright day underexposed.
Get night mode and HDR right for rain after dark
Monsoon nights are the hardest condition of all: wet roads mirror every headlight and streetlight.
- Enable night mode / HDR if your camera has a dedicated one — it prioritises usable detail in low light over a bright-but-noisy image.
- Lower or moderate exposure at night so oncoming headlights don't bloom into white stars that hide the vehicle behind them.
- Accept that some grain is fine — a slightly noisy frame where you can read a plate beats a smooth, bright frame where headlight glare erased it.
Cut reflections with a CPL filter (the biggest single upgrade)
The most effective monsoon fix isn't a setting at all — it's a CPL filter clipped over the lens. A polarising filter cuts reflections off the wet road and the inside of your windscreen, which are the two things ruining rain footage.
- It sharpens plate capture on glistening tarmac.
- It removes the dashboard's reflection that ghosts across the windscreen on humid days.
- Fit it and re-check your framing, since it slightly darkens the image — you may then want that small positive EV nudge.
Keep the lens seeing clearly
Even perfect settings fail if the camera can't see out:
- Mount within the wiper and demister zones (front and rear) so the glass in front of each lens stays clear. This is a monsoon deal-breaker.
- Run the demister/AC to stop the windscreen fogging on the inside — internal fog blurs footage as badly as external rain.
- Clean the lens and the glass in front of it; a smear of grime turns every raindrop into a starburst.
A quick monsoon setup checklist
Before the season, run through this once: WDR on, night mode/HDR on, EV set for the conditions (slightly up for gloom, down for glare), CPL filter fitted, and both lenses sitting inside the wiper/demister zones. Then drive a short loop in the rain and play it back — can you read a plate through the wet and the dark? Adjust EV a notch if not. Ten minutes of tuning now means your dashcam actually delivers evidence during the exact conditions when accidents spike.
Resolution, bitrate and the memory card
Fine detail like a wet, partly obscured number plate needs enough recording quality to survive the rain. Keep your camera at its highest practical resolution during the monsoon so plates stay legible when conditions are poor — this is the season you most need the detail. Higher-quality recording fills the memory card faster, so pair it with a high-endurance, dashcam-rated microSD card of adequate capacity, and format it in the camera periodically so it doesn't fail mid-season. A card that silently stops recording is the worst outcome in the exact months when incidents rise, so treat card health as part of your monsoon prep.
Parking mode in the monsoon
If your dashcam has a parking mode, the monsoon is when it earns its keep — waterlogged parking, reversing mishaps and knocks in crowded, rain-slicked lots are common. Ensure any parking-mode footage benefits from the same WDR and exposure logic, and remember that a car parked in the open collects rain on the glass; the camera can only record what it can see through a wet windscreen. Do a rain test before you rely on it
Settings that look right in the menu can still disappoint on the road. Before the season is in full swing, drive a short loop in actual rain — ideally once in daylight and once after dark — and play the footage back on a larger screen. Ask the real question: can you read the number plate of the car ahead and behind through the wet and the glare? If not, nudge exposure a notch, confirm the CPL filter is fitted and the lenses are in the clear zones, and test again.
